The Coffee Cocktail is a bold-faced lie. The drink contains not an ounce of coffee. It is however, as PDT recommends, “a perfect nightcap.” And delicious.
This creamy cocktail hails from the master of mixology himself, Jerry Thomas, specifically from his book The Bar-Tenders Guide from 1887. Like most creations from the first golden age of mixed drinks, it’s history and true nature are a mystery, long-forgotten in the bottom of some glass somewhere.
The nutmeg garnish harkens memories of the holidays. The whole egg adds to that feeling; the Coffee Cocktail has that viscose mouth feel like egg nog. The port saves it from being Christmas in a glass though, with a little tartness on the back of the palate. Overall it’s mostly creamy with just a hint of sweetness.
